AI visibility is how often and how favorably an AI assistant — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google's AI Overviews — mentions or recommends your business when someone asks a relevant question.
AI visibility is the AI-search equivalent of a search ranking. Instead of asking “where do we rank on Google for this term?”, it asks “when a customer asks an AI assistant about our category, do we get named — and described accurately?” As more people open ChatGPT or Perplexity before they open Google, AI visibility becomes a real channel rather than a curiosity.
It's earned, not bought. A model recommends businesses it has repeatedly seen described consistently and credibly across the web, and that it can pull a clean answer from. So AI visibility comes from the same foundation as good search: a clear, well-structured site that answers real questions, consistent business information everywhere you appear, genuine reviews and third-party mentions, and content fresh enough that the engine trusts it.
The practical reason to care now: the category is young. Authority in AI answers isn't locked up the way Google's first page is, so a focused business can build real AI visibility for its niche faster than it could climb traditional rankings — if it starts before the space gets crowded.
